Companies Must Verify Candidates’ Qualifications Thoroughly as “Fake Degrees” Raise Public Concern
The “FakeDegrees” issue of non-local students is continuously expanding, with over 100 suspected cases discovered by local universities since May 2024. A mainland female student was recently revealed by the University of Hong Kong to have falsified her academic qualifications, she was then sentenced to 17 weeks of imprisonment by the court. The issue has brought serious public attention owing to its severity.
The "DegreeMill" industry has existed for years. According to Forbes, the industry is estimated to generate up to $7 billion a year. This issue not only affects university admissions but also spreads to the job market, posing risks to corporate businesses. To effectively eliminate recruitment risks, companies must conduct thorough employment verification, take special caution, and seek professional assistance especially when handling overseas qualifications to avoid failures in verification due to cultural differences.
